The Mind Body Connection

Most of us assume that healing is something done to us, that if we have a medical problem our responsibility to go to a doctor who will then heal us. That is true to a degree but it is only part of the story. We all participate in our health through our beliefs, our feelings and our attitudes towards toward life, as well as in more direct ways, such as through diet and exercise. Understanding how much you can participate in your health or illness is a significant first step for everyone in getting well.

So much time, money and knowledge have gone into medical technology that it is easy to think as medical science as all powerful. However when, in spite of everything, people still die it is illness that seems all powerful. The genuine medical accomplishments of our time can cause us to forget that many of the essential ingredients of healing are still mysterious.

The link between Stress and Illness

For years it has been observed that illness is more likely to occur following highly stressful events in people's lives.

The following is a list is the result of a study done at the University of Washington School of Medicine (most stressful at the top)

This list contains events that we all recognise as stressful such as death of spouse, divorce and other painful experiences. Interestingly, it also contains events such as marriage, pregnancy or outstanding personal achievement, which are generally thought of as happy experiences. The key is the need to adapt to change, whether or not that change is in a positive or negative direction.

Stress may accumulate to the point that the individual simply can no longer cope and consequently becomes ill or it may increase our susceptibility to illness.

Modern life requires requires that we frequently inhibit our flight or fight response because it would be a socially inappropriate response.

The body is designed for moments of stress, followed by a physical reaction such as fighting or fleeing, do little harm. However, whenever the physiological response to stress is not discharged - because of the social consequences of "fighting" or "fleeing" - there is a negative cumulative effect on the body. This is chronic stress, stress that is held in the body and not released and chronic stress plays a significant role in many illnesses. Chronic stress frequently produces hormonal imbalances which in turn plays a critical role in regulating body functions.


  • High levels of emotional stress increase susceptibility to illness

  • Chronic stress results in a suppression of the immune system, which in turn creates increased susceptibility to illness and especially to cancer.

  • Emotional stress, which suppresses the immune system, also leads to hormonal imbalances. These imbalances could increase the production of abnormal cells at precisely the time the body is least capable of destroying them.
